review 1: Rated 3.5/5Summary: Allay (pronounced A-lay) is a half-demon-half-human hybrid. Ten years earlier, she had inadvertently consumed a demon’s life force while trying to save the demon from an attack. Now, like all other demons, she survives on the emotions that she steals from humans. She no longer needs to eat, drink, or sleep to survive. To be immortal, she only needs to kill a demon every 200 years, and syphon emotional energy from the people around her.Allay does her best to live a human life in spite of her demon side. She runs a bar in New York City, which is the perfect place for her to take small amounts of emotion from the people who go to the bar to escape. By taking their negative feelings, she allows them to feel relief and peace, so she is actually doin... moreg some good in the world in her own way. When Allay’s best demon friend, Shock, overdoses on emotion and begins to fissure, Allay witnesses the creation of demon offspring for the first time. After giving birth, Shock’s defenses are down and she is very vulnerable to attacks from other demons who would like to consume her. Allay is determined to save Shock, but the more she does in Shock’s defense, the deeper she gets drawn into a sinister demon plot to take over the world. With Shock weak and depleted, the only person Allay can depend on is a mysterious stranger named Theo Ram who stepped in to save her from a demon attack. The attraction between Allay and Ram is undeniable, but neither is being honest with the other about who and what they are. Allay wants to push Ram away in order to protect him from her world, but Ram will not be moved. They both want to stop the evil demon plots, but they have very different views of how it should be done. Allay refuses to kill a demon, no matter how evil it might be. If she continues to refuse, her own life force will eventually burn out. Ram, on the other hand, has no problem killing for the greater good.Eventually, Allay reaches the final crossroads. It’s time to kill or be killed. Review: I found parts of this story to be quite captivating, particularly with the regards to the romantic thread. It was very difficult to pull my eyes away from the book during the intense moments. I wish I could have been more engaged in the entire book rather that just individual scenes. The problem I had was trying to make myself care about this demon world. Other than Ram and Allay (sometimes), I didn’t care at all if any of the other demons survived. They were all horrible. If they had all killed each other off, thereby ending the demon population, I would have been perfectly fine with that. So with that being the case, it was really hard to relate to Allay’s struggles with the idea killing another demon. I also thought she was crazy to judge and condemn Ram when he removed murderous demons from the world. I just didn’t buy any of it.The book wasn’t bad. There was some good action and excitement, and the premise was creative. But when it was over, I felt completely ready to leave this world for good. I have no intention or desire to read on in the series. One book was plenty.
review 2: Didn't finish this book. Got up to Ch. 8 and have to say that not sure if this book was trying to be a Urban Fantasy or Sci-fi read. But seriously the characters were uber flat and not multi-dimensional to me at all. There was also a lack of a type of artifice to the characters. Meaning that with most other paranormal or fantasy books there is a certain level of life and energy and get up and go to the story when things happened that shocked the characters. But for this book I felt like there were really dry facts. There was no feel of excitement over or even in the demon world even when the main character's adoptive demon sister was attacked. Or when she gave birth to a new demon. Or even when the main charaacter herself was attacked. So bottom line for me, for a book about a half human/half demon hybrid sucking up emotions to survive. This book just didn't suck me in as much as I thought it would and lacked a boat load of emotion that it should have had. less

Easy read. If you are into super natural stuff, this is ok. Not very in dept.
