review 1: Divorced romance writer goes back to her familial roots of West Virginia to become independent, self sustaining country girl she was at heart. I too have this sort of land/self sustaining lust to be a renegade pioneer woman able to fend for myself.I have recently been bugging my husband to build me a chicken coop and a rain barrel, we have taken the books out of the library and settled on ways to use more natural resources, I just can't get my husband to stop dragging his feet and get going. I long for fresh eggs, chickens pecking the bugs in the back yard and a simpler life. At one time a past boyfriend I was very serious about lived on his family's dairy farm in Wisconsin. I visited his home for 10 days in college and was fully ready to dump it all to live there and ... morehave a different life than the suburbia I thought I knew and loved. I still have grand plans for farm life and getting off the grid.My husband is patient but thinks I am nuts but is willing to accommodate sort of like 52 in the book. This author with my same name has the life I want outside of the long power outages in West Virginias winters. Maybe I should ask her if I could visit and help her out to see if I am up for the challenge.
review 2: I thought I would like this book because I am drawn to the whole city-girl turned country girl storyline but I found that the story was mostly about her dysfunctional relationship with "52", a post-divorce love interest with whom she buys a farm. I couldn't help but feel her voice spent more time explaining that she did nothing at all wrong and that she was victimized anyway within the relationship than in the telling of any adventure in ordinary splendor. It was essentially a failed romance story with goats and chickens. less
