review 1: Reading this partly to get back into the early twenty's mindset that I was in when I went to Galapagos. Very different perspective, but the self-absorption is similar. Also enjoying the vicarious hike from Mt. Whitney to Yosemite, amongst the personal reflection. Understanding this is what "makes" a memoir, also studying this authors angles and thoughts to inform my own writing from my different point of view. Interesting contrast to "Wild" as well. review 2: Amazing memoir. Really captures the spirit of wonder in nature, and describes the beauty of California. The writing is easy, and flows well. It was an interesting read with plenty of humor, as well as the hard truth of hiking 200+ miles. Beautiful poetic writing with many great quotes from a womens perspective of nature, but intertwined with the soul of others like Muir and Thoreau. Really makes you want to sit atop a mountain and reflect. less
