review 1: I think that this is one of those books I will always remember. It's truly unlike any other memoir (if the word even fits) I've ever read. A friend recommended it and when I started it the short (really short) takes on the Mumbai section were like a counter pose to Gilbert's "Signature of All Things." I kept reading fascinated by the un-self-conscience style of the author/illustrator Shopsin (is that possible in a memoir?). It was such insight into an extraordinarily creative mind. Almost like illustrations of moments (often with illustrations). And then without any change in voice it took a turn and became the book I couldn't put down till finished in the wee hours. With the memorable comment on her husband, "She's always had a childlike mind." After finishing I pressed t... morehe book on my daughter immediately, wanting her to read it so we could talk about it. (She didn't get to the spot where she would have been hooked, between holidays and travel). In the weeks following having finished and reluctantly returned the book to the library I've taken a cue from Ann Patchett's book of essays and retitled this memoir, "This is the Story of a Happy Life."
review 2: THis book was a roller coaster for me. I really didn't much like it at first. Didn't care about some New Yorkers trip to India. Almost stopped reading it altogether, but it kinda sucked you in and when something else came up later in the book, I really warmed to the book and the writer's style. It was like she was intentionally trying to bore me with life to make me as surprised as she was at the next turn of events. Anyway, I liked it in the end. less
