review 1: Gone Fishing is a poetry book written by Tamera Will Wissinger, this is a debut author and tells the story of nine- year old boy named Sam who is excited to go for fishing. The day is all about fishing, relationship of father and son, excitement, difficulty of fishing, sibling rivalry which adds up into an adventurous day any child would like to experience. All of the important elements of a fishing trip: the early start, the quiet on the lake, the waiting for a fish, the jealousy of watching someone else catch a fish first, and the joy of the tug on the line, are all wonderfully realized in the poetry. This all has been told using a variety of poetic forms.Highly recommended as both an excellent read and also a wonderful tool to teach poetry to young writerspoem:"You caug... moreht one, Sam!"Lucy scoots close to me."A big one, too!"I nod, gulp.I didn't even lookwhen she caughther first fish. But shecheered for me.Maybe I was wrongabout bringing her along.
review 2: "Gone Fishing" by Tamera Will Wissinger is a lovely ode to fishing and families. Via different poetic forms, and employing a variety of poetic techniques (all explained in a glossary at the back of the book), Wissinger's story takes place over two days. Sam daydreams about the big fishing trip that Sam and his dad have planned for the following day. However, Sam's younger sister, Lucy, insinuates herself into his plans to spend the day all alone with his dad. However...it all works out in the end, and the three of them spend a memorable day together. The only thing that kept me from giving this book a "5 star" review was the fact that the fluency of the story was often interrupted by the use of poetic forms that slowed the pacing, rather than propelling it forward. For instance, immediately after the fast moving list poem, "What to Pack?" comes the double dactyl poem "On the Road." At the moment that the three of them finally get moving, comes this piece that stops the story dead in its tracks - all with the awkward use of the word "overabundantly" to slow things up. I had to read this piece a few times to get its meaning.Overall, "Gone Fishing," is a story that boys and girls alike, grades 3 - 7, will enjoy immensely. less
