review 1: What's not to love about this book? The action starts in a psychiatric unit of a Young Offenders Institution, so you know from the get go you're in for a gripping read. THe narrator, Emily, has a really strong voice, and you lock into her rebellion immediately as she tries to wind up the doctors. I loved reading about their art therapy sessions and all the cigarette breaks... think Girl, Interrupted. If you liked reading about the girls' relationships in that institute, here's more of the same but with the added mystery of a crime to solve. Ok, she's hard to like, but if you're not rooting for Emily, there must be something wrong with you. Thats the skill of the author, to create a 'baddie' protagonist that you are compelled with. I'll be reading everything by Tanya Byrne f... morerom now on.
review 2: This was good but could have been so much better. The menace was there and the story seemed to be building up to reveal something terrible - Emily kept mentioning how renowned and evil she was but it all seemed to boil down to nothing. I liked the writing style and the characterisation of Emily was good, however I never got a good picture of all the other characters and felt no emotion for them. By the end of the book I just felt a bit let down. less
