review 1: Tara Moss in the flesh is such a gracious and thoughtful person and this book is a reflection of someone who has been both adulated and vilified for what society still deems the most valuable of women's assets- their looks. Written now as a middle aged woman who has the 'luxury' of the creeping invisibility of the forties and beyond- she now has the distance and maturity to write clearly and well about feminism- the movement that women still cannot afford to let go. Tara's daughter, to whom this book is dedicated, needs to hear this, every generation, every culture needs to hear what MOss has to say, over and over again until the message is heard and actioned.
review 2: I do suffer from op-ed fatigue and I was worried this might be an extended version of the sa
... moreme, but I decided to take a punt anyway, as I’ve long been intrigued by Tara Moss. She’s got many distinct personalities - which might sound like a deranged character in one of her crime novels, but I refer instead to the different fronts she has: author, model, wife, etc. I must admit, I’m not a big fan of her crime novels – they’re a little too slick, but by god she’s prolific – but this book is not by Tara Moss, Crime Writer. In The Fictional Woman, she examines the labels that are put upon women. She writes unflinchingly about her miscarriage and her rape as a young model, but also looks at a broader view of the way women are represented in politics and the media. Sounds like fodder for a lot of female columnists right now, but Moss‘s is a fresh voice on the subject, particularly as someone who has been the subject of the male gaze for a living, and has also written extensively about violent crimes against women. Engrossing. less

Parts were interesting - but I couldn't finished it. A book of first world problems and controversy.
