Smiley and West outline our issues of poverty of opportunity, affirmation, courage, compassion, and imagination. They lay out a 12-point plan to eradicate poverty in one of the wealthiest nations on Earth. This is an important book for the average citizen to read, but it's a book that needs to be read by policymakers and community leaders. We need righteous outrage that poverty exists, we need compassion and courage to face the issues honestly and openly, and we need to work together to solve this crisis and see the rising tide lift all boats.
review 2: The book provides a great detailed history of how we got to the biggest inequality gap in a very lon... moreg time. The facts and commentary made me angry at the lack of support and initiatives out there for people facing poverty; however, I found myself frustrated that there wasn't more included about what the average person, like me or you, could do to help this situation. Their "call to action" was to write a letter to the President, demanding an examination at the current situation. I am all for writing letters but I feel like there should have been more about what we can do as individuals to help. less
