review 1: This was one of my choices for non-fiction. I have been reading it off & on for about 5 weeks. I have completed about 70% of the book, and I am returning it to the library. I know that living through the Great Depression had a lasting impact on previous generations. I thought it would be inspiring to read about one person's good works, long kept secret, more than 50 years after the fact. I learned a lot about the depression, and about the people who lived through it. At first the stories were interesting and then they became rather repetitive. The stories were heartbreaking. I hope that I never have to face the devastation faced by the real families in this book. It is so sad to think of proud, hardworking Americans suffering and dying from illness,malnutrition,an... mored homelessness. As political "fat cats" play with our economy and make decisions that fill their pockets and harm the average working man, I am afraid that history my repeat itself.
review 2: 2.5 Stars. What a wonderful act of kindness and generosity Sam Stone bestowed on the Canton community during the 1933 depression. While the responses to his ad to offer cash gifts to those in distress where all heartfelt, they became redundant after a while, and I found myself skimming through the latter half of the book. Perhaps a shorter version of the story would have kept my interest. I do admire the investigative work of the author as well as his grandfather's compassion. less
