review 1: story of how a Romanian immigrant that never told the truth of his background sent $5 to 75 families in Canton Ohio in 1933. Got rather repetitive about the hardships. Nothing new on the hardship of those who lived in the great depression. although I do think it interesting that the author highlights the lack of plumbing for farmers in 1933 in Ohio. I don't think that was a Depression characteristic. I to think that was just the way it was in 1933. My dad grew up on a farm with the lack of in door plumbing. it is unfortunate that he had to guess as to his grandfather's motives and actual background since it was hidden and even his grandmother wouldn't tell the whole story. guess this is why we need to keep journals-- of course the story wasn't told because he was a... more Jew and felt that he might be sent back to Romanian
review 2: After his grandparents' deaths, Ted Gup finds a trove of letters to a mysterious B. Virdot from Depression-era Cantonians, referencing an advertisement the mystery man placed in the Canton Repository offering to send money to help those in need during the Christmas of 1933. Upon further inspection, Gup learns many of his grandfather's secrets and seeks to uncover what Canton, Ohio and its inhabitants looked liked during The Great Depression.I enjoyed the book and found it hugely informative. The letters revealed a human side of The Great Depression and gave readers insight into the struggles Cantonians faced during that difficult time. The variety of letters and writers was, at times, difficult to follow and the parallels Gup drew between 1933 and 2008 seemed a little forced, but overall, I really appreciated this book. less
