review 1: I read this book in fits and starts over many months! He covers the biographical side of the stories of these 3 well known generals well and he paints interesting pictures of all three of them. The surprise to me was quite how dis-agreeable they all were as individuals, which he pretty much suggests is a trait of a successful general.Brighton's summaries of some of the more tactical aspects of the key battles covered however do not stand up to close inspection. For instance Rhino tanks being pretty much responsible for allowing the US to overcome the bocage in Normandy when in fact though useful they were not the 'battle winner' suggested. That sort of statement made me question the veracity of some other areas he describes that I had less background reading to validate aga... moreinst.Nevertheless the focus of the book was on the personalities and relative achievements of each of them and the book got that across well.
review 2: I enjoyed this version of the greater story. As most WWII books focus on specific theaters of war and/or specific battalions, I found this to be interesting. Patton, Montgomery, and Rommel can each be accused of having huge egos and each was able to compartmentalize the actual casualties of war in a way that made them appear either completely apathetic or superhuman in their lack of emotions. My largest complaint about this book was the Rommel bits seemed tossed in. They didn't add to the story or balance it in any way. The book could have been about the struggle between the British and American leadership and it would have been complete. less

This is a good introductory book on the above three. Quick, easy read. Three gigantic egos.

Very interesting book about three genuine prima donas. Amazingly, Rommel was my favorite.
