review 1: The title character may be clever, but not enough to escape an ordinary life. Stella makes the same mistakes many of us do, but the story is illuminated by her telling of it in hindsight. Her most important insight is that that special man she thought was her soul mate and whom she loved is not worthy of her. Stella makes a good life for herself, even though it is not what she thought it would be. This is a lovely book, beautifully and poetically written, full of rueful insight into a life that is, in the final analysis, well lived.
review 2: This book could have been a four in that Hadley writes so well and takes you so deep into the thoughts of the main character and gives you such a sense of the time and place. I think I only gave it a 3 bcause I found i
... moret so disheartening. While I know good literature isn't there to cheer one, the initimate portrait of Stella is both so intimate and so painful, reading about her was a difficult journey but well worth the time. less
