review 1: I loved the movie, and I love Westerns stories in general, so I thought this would be a shoe in. Unfortunately, it could just not keep my attention. There was a lot more speculation over hard fact than I typically care for in a history of biography, though the author can hardly be faulted for this as there was a lot more sensaltionalism than hard-core record keeping in the late 1800's West. Also, the narrative began to drag in parts, mostly when talking about Butch Cassidy. The Sundance parts were, in contrast, excellently written, but unfortunately those parts were where a lot of the speculation occured as well. The whole thing might have been better off being written as a historical novel, so at least the author could write the parts he was unsure about off a flights of ... morefancy. Perhaps, when I'm in more "Western-esque" frame of mind, I'll try it again. But, for the moment, I felt it was a pretty lackluster experience.
review 2: Well, I think this western writer did a fine job of not only relating to us the lives of Butch and Sundance but he also gave us a wonderful sense of what life was really like in the west around the turn of the century as electricity, automobiles etc became more and more commonplace. His research of the years they were in South America was exhaustive. My oh my, if ever we could find out what happened to Etta Place, we would wind up in genealogies hall of fame! In terms of the death of these two, the author points out, there is no credible evidence that they ever left the adobe house in San Vicente any other way but feet first!Frank less
