review 1: My daughter picked this book up for me, primarily because she is taking an introductory microbiology course and thought I might find it interesting. She was correct. While I learned a lot about Robert Koch, Louis Pasteur and Arthur Conan Doyle, I was fully engrossed with the changes that occurred during their respective times in the spotlight. Koch's work on anthrax was incredible, as were the numerous improvements he made to the growing field of bacteriology, not to mention the postulates we've all memorized at some point in our education. However, his flaws were equally critical, eventually leading to his downfall. It was also interesting to see Pasteur depicted as a media hound, and Conan Doyle's transition from a small town physician to an internationally loved author... more, who wanted nothing more than to be rid of Sherlock Holmes. I enjoyed Thomas Goetz' writing style, and will seek out other books by him.
review 2: Fascinating story about the discovery that microbes cause disease and about late 19th century science in general. Robert Koch would make a great P.T. Anderson movie with his rise and fall. Arthur Conan Doyle is a much sunnier character. There's also a lot of great stuff about how science got translated into action and just the staggering size of tuberculosis as a disease. It was seemingly everywhere in a way I just can't fathom as a modern person. less

Fascinating subject, nicely written, but actually two books about two barely connected men.
