review 1: I recieved this book from the publisher for my participation in a discussion of it in the History Book Club. It is an excellent history of two people and their involvement in the Holocaust during World War II. The story juxtopposes the lives Hanns Alexander and Rudolf Höss and the story is chilling in its normality of each person, from their own perspective. The book does an excellent job of showing how warcrimes can be done without thought of the evil being done. The life or Höss and his family was priviledged by their disregard for prisoners under his control. The alternation between characters is a great way to see the horror of Höss's actions when you learn about Hanns Alexander's life. While there is not enough justice on Earth for his crimes, it is good to hea... morer how Hanns Alexander tracks him (and others) down and sees him ultimately convicted of his crimes. All in all and excellent history of that time and place.
review 2: Auschwitz - World's greatest pulpit of horror. A concentration camp that devoured 3 million Jewish inmates. Rudolph Hoss - The Kommandant of Auschwitz, a remorseless Nazi devoted to Himmler and the architect of this notorious death camp. Hanns Alexander - a disposed German Jew who enlists with the British Army and has as his awoved and burning mission the hunting down of Hoss to mete out justice. Thomas Harding's racy true story is poignant, pensive and precious. A story of despicable horrors and depravity; a narrative of selfless nobility and purpose; above all a lesson for the whole of mankind to never ever allow a recurrence of the ghastly happenings from 1941-45 at Auschwitz. A must read for every man, woman and child who is a literate. less
