review 1: I keep telling myself not to read these type of books as they are filled with an overwhelming aura of selflessness and valor. It's the least I can do-to read their stories and know their full measure. I wonder too if we as a nation are truly deserving of these men and their families. The cover just cries out to be picked up and you, the reader, will do your share of crying as the worst moments of a parent or a spouse's life are described during the casualty notification call. But these two guys really lived life and would want to be celebrated. Both jocks, both leaders, guys you would follow to the ends of the earth because they always had your back. The author really didn't discuss the academic majors of each man at USNA, the constant pressure for good grades, nor did he... more go into the whole process of service selection. Nor do you get the idea that Travis Manion was not an infantry officer. He was a logistician who did it all. Manion actually left the Academy for Drexel and in a very rare case was allowed back into USNA. I don't remember that happening during my days there. Brendan Looney had to go USN intelligence because he was color blind. He applied for Navy SEAL training and got a waiver for color blindness and graduated from BUDS as the honor man-no easy feat. And the fates were not kind to him as he was so close to finishing his tour in Afghanistan when his chopper crashed. The biggest regret you will have after reading this book is that you didn't personally know these two men.
review 2: An excellent account of the sacrifices involved in (1) making it through a service academy, (2) serving as a combat leader, and (3) the stresses borne by military families. However, as both of the book's subjects died in combat, the writer is left with primarily emails and letters written to family and friends by young men who, let's face it, do not constitutionally bend towards introspection but rather action. In short, the end result is myopic. Also, the fact that the father of the slain Marine is co-author, does naturally grant the lion's share of coverage to Lt. Manion. Still, it's greatest value is to inform the 99% who don't serve in arms what a gulf exists between us and the 1% who do. less
