review 1: While Craig Claiborne is not necessarily a likeable guy(who skips their Momma's funeral?), you must respect how he positively impacted American culinary tastes and practices during his career at the New York Times. On a personal level, I often found him to be a sad and pitiful character – even at the height of his career success. The book is well written and well researched – a quick and easy read, especially for those interested in cuisine.
review 2: I really enjoyed this journey into the restaurant scene of NYC - the start and creation of the concept of "restaurant critic." Claiborne was a real character who celebrated life to the max, while never addressing the problems living such a lifestyle could have as one ages. McNamee has done a stunning job of
... morecapturing this period in history while grabbing the essence of who Claiborne was and what he brought to the table. A must read for foodies and for people who enjoy being "served." less

I found this interesting, but not great. However, it took me back to my younger days.
