review 1: As an individual who is still trying to learn more about economics, I found this book very insightful on how the housing boom/bust let to the 2009 recession. The author did seem to have a strong biases however I thought he did a good job creating an abstract view of his opinion. The book represents the first time I ever heard exactly how the decades, starting in the 70s, led to the 2009 recession.
review 2: I read Sowell to get a sense of the arguments that say government intervention caused the financial crisis. Sowell makes compelling points, all of which don't preclude the idea that better regulation would have helped the financial system as well. Perhaps most compelling is Sowell's analysis of Fannie and Freddie which were (are?) nothing short of embarrass
... moreing, as well as his take on how a good intention in Washington (let's help minorities get housing) turned bad, leading to lower lending standards and an eventual bust. less
