review 1: I was given a free copy of her second book only to realize I needed to read the first. I ended up starting with her short story, a prequel, which is recommended but not necessary. As for this one, I agree with other reviewers. I ended up rereading the first 50 pages to really understand what was going on. It's a lot to digest and if you're not focused you'll miss something important. But once you get the hang of the world, you want to stay there. Something always seems to be lurking under the surface. The first main character is a strong female, which I like. Her narrative is in first person. Oddly enough, the other main character's story is told in a close third person. Somehow it works though, I just wonder why the author chose to write this way. What sets thi... mores apart from other steampunk is that London actually went through a portal and landed in fairyland. Now the fantasy creatures (not just fairies) are refined for myth that power homes and machinery. That definitely piqued my interest even if it is a bit chilling. There is some underlying social commentary going on here, which I like. But overall, it's the voice of the feminist archivist witch that keeps you turning pages. Now I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!
review 2: I loathed the heroine so much. I was angry the entire time I read it. Not just because of her, but for the plot and the way Miss Trent structured the story. I mean, the writing was (mostly) fine, but the plot and world-building and characterization (basically everything that makes a good story) was lacking. I liked the idea; it was really new and unusual, which is REALLY hard to do. But really, half the time I had no idea what was going on. less
