review 1: This was a rather odd book that, perhaps, should have been two books. There were leaps and gaps in the plot and narrative that might have been smoother if expanded to two books. The magic element was abruptly introduced to the unsuspecting protagonist and reader at the same time which may have been an intentional mood device. There were several times that the story felt choppy, unfinished, and unsatisfying, like a light snack instead of a nice meal. As intriguing as the premise was, which kept me reading, my main problem was the character of Bekah. She was like a combo of street tough, uncertain race with a chip on her shoulder, smart mouth, and almost battered woman gun shy. Some of her asides were gratuitous and unnecessary and many of her statements were borderli... morene alienating. Some of the moralizing and stereotyping was boring and stale and, again, made the characters unsympathetic and less dimensional to the reader. I found the name of the property offensive, as I was supposed to, but just rolled my eyes at the idiotic statements about North Carolina being the "deep south" and the comment about locals passing the time by throwing rocks into dirt holes was just offensively Yankee. This book had lots of potential, but needed smoothing, expanding, and a bit more heart.
review 2: I want to start by saying that I liked it. The story is fun, there's plenty of original invention, and the writing has an ingrained sense of humor which keeps one engaged and happy. The ending, while not what I would have written myself, was fitting and satisfying; and really, I didn't write it, so why should I decide the ending? The only critique I had was the flatness, at times, of the characters. They had too much personality, verging on caricatures or stereotypes. There is a self-conscious attempt at feminism which, while well-intentioned, was pretty obvious and not always successful. But I enjoyed reading it, cover to cover, and would recommend it to anybody looking for something fun. less

A bit formulaic in terms of both romance and mystery, but not a bad read.

Maybe it was the Audible narrator - but this one wasn't for me

I -loved- this book. Almost Gaiman's Stardust-y.
