review 1: Great book on not only the back story inspiring the Count of Monte Cristo but also the French Revolution, Napoleon's rise to power, and racism in 18th century France (both the good and the bad, as France waffled between being the most liberating country for blacks at the time and then reneging on those freedoms). A very interesting read, and I found Dumas to be an inspiring person. I wish France would get his statue back up (it was torn down by the Nazis).
review 2: It is wonderfully done but it took me so long to read because the author keeps you very aware that even at the high points of his life how everything is going to fall apart. The author foreshadows it (this got to be a little too much for me((enough all ready I know things end badly for the revoluti
... moreon can you stop mentioning before we get there)) and from my previous study of this period I knew it all was going to go badly. I just didn't know when or exactly how. I feel I have a much better idea of how this period of time in France and how it connects to the rest of the world (even after taking a french history class in college). Very well done. less

Enjoyed the history and learning about such a fascinating larger-than-life historical figure.
