review 1: I haven't read anything else by Tony Judt, so it was a bit strange jumping in on his recap and commentary on his academic life. I was planning to give it three stars, until I got to the last few chapters, where he discussed the need for facts in teaching (thank you!) and compared and contrasted contemporary American with contemporary European politics. Those sections were worth their weight in gold and will color how I think about those issues for some time to come. It was a bit off-putting dealing with his dismissive stance toward feminism, but fortunately, that wasn't a focus of the book, and he is a product of his generation. Now, I want to read Post War. I've been increasingly interested in eastern Europe for a while, and the idea of a book that weaves the contemporary... more histories of eastern and western Europe together sounds ideal.
review 2: An interesting narrative autobiography interspersed with musings on 20th Century ideas and their influence on the events of that time. The book is the result and record of a long conversation between two historians. It successfully weaves the story of Tony Judt's life into the larger historical and intellectual currents of the 20th Century. One of the most redeeming qualities is Judt’s magical use of language to describe complex thoughts in succinct, mellifluous style. less

Unremittingly, almost oppressively brilliant. I want to re-read this book when I grow up.

Tony Jdt held to the old religion, and this is as good a demonstration of that as any.
