review 1: Tony Judt takes a historian's lens to consider how politics and economics collide, and how their interaction has led to a dearth of valuing society. Judt highlights the role and the need for reconsidering social democracy to take us away from what he considers to be a destructive path towards less civil society and more economic inequality and despair.The beginning of the book has some regrettably weak correlations and stats, but about 1/3 of the way in Judt's strength as a career historian comes through, weaving themes that ought be weaved.
