review 1: I was really impressed with this book by Tyler Chase. The way the author writes is captivating from the beginning and you just want to keep reading and reading and not stop. It is both descriptive and has great world building (important for a fantasy-sci/fi) but also is fast moving so that you aren’t bored. I was reading as fast as I could, and even though it’s a pretty long book, I was disappointed when it was over, especially because it ends right with some pretty crazy twists in the plot that make it where you are just dying to know what will happen next. Hope the follow up book is released soon. A must read for fans of fantasy, sci-fi, suspense thrillers.
review 2: This novel was, in a word, amazing.Never before have a picked up a science fiction novel
... moreand suddenly found myself bombarded with one of the greatest romances I’d read all year. It also outpaced the thrillers and action novels I had in my reading list as well. When I finished reading, I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. At the heart of the novel is the love story between Comron and Vaush. They were once sworn enemies because their families had been feuding for ages, but in true Romeo and Juliet fashion, they fall head over heels in love with each other after finding themselves stranded together in a rainforest with no means of communicationto the outside world. A lot of things stand in the way of them truly being together, including their families, the fate of entire worlds, and a heck of a lot of political intrigue (not to mention whatever is hunting them in the rainforest) – and let’s just say that if you want to know if they make it to happily ever after, you’re going to have to read the next book to find out. This book leaves you hanging in a satisfyingly frustrating way.Sometimes I found myself so caught up in the feuding and intrigue and old-world style that I forgot I was reading a science fiction novel. But then something happens, like DNA reveals a character isn’t who everyone thought, and I just had to stop reading for a second, because I would get all excited. The book had EVERYTHING I look for in a good novel. Twists and turns, a sci-fi setting, a good romance, action, and an 19th century-modeled setting. Why aren’t there more books like this???As a writer of science fiction myself, I always feel disappointed when I pick up a book by a fellow sci-fi author, only to discover it reads like a dry description of how to operate a shuttle through hyperspace. Science fiction always seems to forget that real stories are about characters. But not author Tyler Chase. This is one of the few times that I’ve read a science fiction book that is full of three-dimensional characters with a character-driven plot to boot. Also, if you throw in a prince of any sort, I’m typically hooked. I have a very long reading list here on good reads (200+ books), but I intend to bump book two in the Van Laden Chronicles straight to the top. less
