review 1: In this historical fiction about England’s Richard III, the main character is a young girl from the merchant class forced into a marriage she’s unhappy about. Luckily for her, her husband conveniently dies four chapters in. She then creates a silk empire in England while having a steamy affair with Richard III, who she describes as pretty damn hot. I have trouble believing this, since Richard III had pretty severe scoliosis and his portrait doesn’t exactly make me swoon. Historical inaccuracies aside, this book still suffers from a somewhat unbelievable plot. Overall, this book is okay, but I think I probably would have enjoyed it more in my less critical youth.
review 2: Figures in Silk is a wonderful story set it the late 1400. Isabel Lambert's father m
... morearried her off to the son of The House of Claver, a wealthy silk dynasty. When her young husband dies, she is forced into apprenticeship for her mother-in-law. As she becomes involved, she finds she loves the colors and textures and all aspects of the industry. It is a wonderful book that allows insight into the early English politics, and very interesting facts on how the Englishwomen became involved in fabric production. There are also many twists and turns that will draw you into this wonderful story. This is a must read. less
