review 1: The writing style grabbed me almost immediately. It's mature, intelligent and well structured -- a perfect compliment to the story itself. This isn't your standard fairy-tale based YA fantasy, by any means. Thyra's moral warts are not shied away from or polished over, yet they're justified in her motivation. The other characters all follow their own paths, yet dovetail convincingly into the story's flow. No one here is designed for a Burger King glass or Happy Meal toy.The story moves crisply, without tedious world-building or fawning over scenery. What's left is an entertaining read with characters who live and react convincingly. I challenge anyone to read it without feeling it stands on its merits as a great story, period, not just a great YA fan... moretasy.
review 2: First, let me just say that…I almost didn’t read it for fear that the story wouldn’t live up to the cover. I mean, look at that cover! I also didn’t expect this book to be so short, but it was still just as wonderful.I really, really liked it!Thyra Winter is the Snow Queen, and her task is to put a shattered mirror back together again before her eighteenth birthday. Otherwise, she will become a wraith. And Thyra will do anything to make sure that is not her fate.I really liked the character developments, and watching Thyra grow in more ways than one, was wonderful. I loved all the characters and the purposes they served the story. I even liked Gerda in the end ;)I’m not a romantic, but…I liked the romance in this story. It wasn’t the driving force of the story, and there was definitely no insta-love. Kai and Thyra have so much in common that I knew they would end up together eventually. (That’s not a spoiler, is it? Sorry if it is though. But there is a twist at the end, so I won’t spoil that one :) .)The writing.I liked the author’s writing style. It fit perfectly with the story and Thyra’s point-of-view. What I liked the most is Thyra’s mantra:This does not touch me. Such words hold no power. Let them fade. Let it go.The one negative I found.Kai is presented as a man of logic and reasoning. I understood that there were some parts that required him to suspend logic to believe the fantastical, but what I didn’t like is that he seemed to accept certain things (I can’t say which) without question, which kind of bothered me. It’s not the fact that he accepted them that bothered me, but it’s the fact that it’s out of character for him to accept things so easily. My favorite quote:“…What do you think lies at the heart of magic, Kai, if not the perfection of logic?”–ThyraThis was a really fun read and I recommend it to you. less
