review 1: This is a M/M story about two men from very different backgrounds. Vincent Kamateros is the exiled Lord Heir of the Orbus Arcana. Since Vincent was excited from his home and clan in Italy he decides with the help of his friend Angelo, to open a bakery. When his landlord crashes his car into the bakery and dies he meets Detective John Reeder. The attraction between the two is instant but there are a few problems, John hasn't come out of the closet yet and Vincent isn't human. That's right Vincent is a vampire and is living in the human world. Their problems begin when John isn't willing to come out of the closet to his friends and family and Vincent definitely can't tell John he's a vampire. Vincent has spent the last two years in exile and other than his friend and fellow ... morevampire Angelo popping in and out of his life he is all alone. John is afraid of the reactions of his fellow cops and his family so he has tried to date women but once he falls for the Italian prince he realizes that there isn't anyone else for him. This isn't your average vampire story, no sparkly vampires and no teenaged angst. But it kind of did bother me how wishy-washy John was about his feelings for Vincent and how he kept falling back on his Catholic upbringing and his parents wishes even though he is an older man. There is some comedy.some hit and miss suspense and some romance woven into the story. I will read book 2 and see where it goes, hopefully the relationship aspect picks up more now that John has finally decided he wants a relationship with a man, not just a one night stand. I give it 4 stars and am diving into book 2 right away.
review 2: For the Bite of It had a really interesting blurb that caught me and hooked me with two words Vampire Baker. I had to read more, it turns out that Vincent Esposito is the vampire baker in question and an exiled vampire noble to boot. His history is a big part of the story so without ruining or spoiling anything I will just say that he is such a noble and good friend that the reason he was exiled is not his doing, nor his fault, however he will bear this punishment in silence, for his reason for doing it is righteous indeed. Now back to the main story; Vincent’s land lord (who is not well liked) is dead and in the middle of Vincent’s bakery. The cause of death? Unknown but the car ramming through the bakery probably didn’t help matters. This puts Vincent in close contact with a human closeted cop, John Reeder. What follows next is an investigation, a secret sexy fling, and the baring of souls. This had all the makings of a fantastic novel. The problem is that upon reading the blurb and 9/10th of the story I realized that this is only part one. Normally I adore sequels and series of books, especially with the same characters (better to get to know them) but this book upset me because of the abrupt ending. Everything was going along fine, there seemed to be a bigger plot building, and bam! Cut scene. It was so unexpected and hasty that it jarred me out of the novel, I honestly thought that the pdf file had downloaded incomplete, but research yielded that this is the Vampire Exile book one. When book two comes out I have no idea, I only hope that its ending is less rushed. Enjoy.~ Bitten by Books for AReCafe less
