review 1: Byron knows he’s getting close to determining whether the big cats at the refuge where he’s working undercover are being sold for use in illegal big game hunts. The fact that Kendall, the head keeper obviously has issues with the owner, and seems torn about what they are doing, while genuinely caring about the animals gives Byron the in he needs to get the evidence. Some marijuana and some pillow talk nets him the truth, however the owner attacks Kendall while showing the “merchandise” to a buyer and comes very close to killing him before the police and Byron can rescue him. This was an interesting topic for me. While I’m not an avid animal rights advocate, using endangered animals for some idiot to hunt for sport does upset me and to be honest, sometimes I don... moret like to think about it even existing somewhere like the US, but I know it does. This book ends just as Kendall and Byron are really getting started as a couple and Byron has noted that being undercover is hell on a relationship, and Kendall’s preserve is in the middle of nowhere, so what will happen to them now? Will they attempt a relationship? I would have liked to see a bit more of a decision either way, but it’s an interesting topic for a short story. The author notes that a portion of the proceeds from many of his books go to animal charities so it’s obviously a cause that is close to Mr. Diamond’s heart.* This story is included in the print book Rough Cut: Vincent Diamond Collected by Vincent Diamond and is offered free by All Romance e-books.
review 2: I need to stop reading short stories! Most of them are too short to have much of a point to them. But this one...There was a great little story in it. It felt like we were just seeing a scene from something larger, and I would have loved to see the story expanded. Instead of dropping us in on the day they try to bust these people for illegal selling of large wild cats, this would have been great to expand it to a week, or a month. But it was very sweet and I enjoyed what there was of it. less
