review 1: "That’s why I always try to show my students the forests, rather than take them up and down every single tree. That is also what I have tried to do in this book for you. I hope you have enjoyed the journey."When I finished reading For the Love of Physics, the realization of that I, unfortunately, had the worst Physics teachers a can student have, was fully assured. Walter Lewin is by far the most outstanding Physics teacher out there. He deserves the honorable title of a Teacher. A teacher that makes you jump from your seat and look for rainbows a 42 degree away from a line you just made in your imagination. A teacher that makes you teach too, teaching people how thunder sound is produced. A teacher that ignite your mind with questions whenever you look up the sky and se... moree stars and wonder which one is a binary and which one is a Neutron. A teacher who is capable of easing concepts and making them understandable so that students can bear and bother to receive them instead of losing their interests. I mourn the years I have wasted on hating Physics because the douchbag poor teachers I had.
review 2: The book is written as an autobiography and as a Physics textbook at the same time. For someone that has been a student of Physics for a long time but does not work in a field directly applying Physics or Mathematics, the book really got my attention in a couple of ways - 1. It was a refresher on everything I had learnt in school and approached in the same order, starting with the simpler concepts of measurement and units and moving progressively on to linear motion, Newtonian mechanics, complex motion, gravity, light, electricity, magnetism and electromagnetic phenomena. 2. All of the basic ideas of physics he talks about, Walter Lewin superimposes on his personal experiences and observations in day to day life which gives more meaning to the concepts and why we need to learn about them to understand the world around us better.Towards the later part of the book, he focuses on his experimentation and that of colleagues and others relating to X-rays. For those who are eternally awed by the wonders of space and what lies beyond the reaches of our perception, these chapters will present great delight. There is discussion on neutron stars, x-ray binaries, black holes, quasars, pulsars and all forms of interesting bodies. There is also a lot of description around the experimental methods used to measure, analyze and hypothesize the nature of observed phenomena which is all very interesting if you have that bent of mind.If you are using the audiobook, some of the mathematics and measurements may be a bit hard to follow - especially when they are coming thick and fast. The narration on the one I used was pretty decent but it was still hard to keep up sometimes. Overall, this is a fantastic book and for anyone that loves Physics and hasn't been in touch with the concepts lately, a must read. If for nothing, just to share in the author's enthusiasm, passion and the love of Physics. less
