If you’ve been on my Instagram, you may have seen me posting about this book. you may have read how I felt and how much i truly adored this book. Instagram however doesn’t allow me the space to truly express how this book has moved me. or at least I don’t think it does.
The chalk pit by Elly Griffiths, is possibly one of the best books I’ve read in 2017. It might not be yours but it was mine. It moved me, a good book should move you. Make you think about how you act, respond and treat certain situations and this book did. It made me reflect on how I act around homelessness and homeless people in general. It perfectly reflects peoples attitude of shrugging off what happens to someone on the street and not really caring but someone within a house suddenly its a different matter. They’re still people just in a different situation that not everyone can relate to.
I couldn’t put this book down, my customers at work know I’m an avid reader and I’ve recommended them all to read this book, one has even read it themselves and they loved it too, so naturally we spent a while discussing it. Or as i like to cover my back, I did some pretty damn good customer service. I couldn’t guess the plot twists, I couldn’t predict the ending. The characters aren’t all young and in their prime, they middle aged, with families, no they’re not all perfect, some are mismatched but its realistic, its relate-able. Its easy to imagine.
I cant stop raving about this book enough, I can’t stop telling people to read it and I cant stop thinking about how its made me change my attitude when I walk through the streets, passing homeless people. There’s been a big movement about homelessness, yet it isn’t enough. At the end of the day of course, they’re still people, they are sentient beings and I really feel people need to remember that. This book helps you do just that.
