review 1: I would say that Wendy Burden's writing actually deserves four stars. I'm giving it three stars just because I didn't get what I wanted out of it, which is partly my fault due to the fact that I didn't research it enough before picking it up. I had been hoping that it would have had more information about the history of the Vanderbilt family, but instead, the book only deals with Burden's immediate relatives. I don't particularly read memoirs/biographies/autobiographies unless I already know something about the person so this was a new experience for me. Burden is a very good writer, which was one of the things that kept me reading (that and our mutual love of Wednesday Addams). Her writing clever and she crafts some very good similes, though at times, I find her descripti... moreons of people can be a bit mean-spirited.
review 2: Although I read this book a year or two ago, it still sticks in my mind as absolutely hilarious, and one of the best books I have read. Usually I judge a book by my inability to put it down. Did I call into work sick so I could keep reading, etc. This one was one of those. Wendy's hilarious outlook on the raw dysfunction tied me to her on so many levels, even in light of the glaring dissonance between us of fortune and family notoriety. I hope Wendy finds other topics to apply her humorous outlook to so that we can be entertained yet again. Thank you. less

Funny, sad but true memoir of the current generation of Vanderbilts. Not worth a lot of time.

This book reminded me a lot of Jeanette Walls' The Glass Castle, only with money.
