review 1: I read this book with a mixture of disgust, fascination and incredulity. How has this story never been told before? In Edwardian England, writer Thomas Day, an oft-thwarted bachelor, inspired by Rousseau's child rearing book "Emile", seeks to raise the perfect wife for himself. He obtains two young girls from a local orphanage as the subjects of his experiment, with hopes of eventually settling on the best one as they prove themselves in conforming to his self-serving ideals. This really happened. Astounding.
review 2: Fascinating. Delightfully gossipy while richly informative and researched with full references available mapping out the historical points. Insightful as the personal stories of the books real life characters intersect with the great and the good
... more of their times, and the big ideas of American Independence, Slavery, Rousseau's idealistic eduction system, and inventions are deftly interwoven with detailed yet entertaining descriptions of the habits and attitudes of the time. less

Gave up about 1/3 of the way in. A bit too much back and forth. Somewhat interesting.

Although this was based on a fascinating historical event, it was laborious to read.

Interesting premise, but way too long - I skimmed most of the second half.

Now I know where my fair lady originated and it wasn't so sugary sweet.
