review 1: “The Philosophy Book” by the DK publishing book and an enjoyable read. Initially, I intended to use this as a casual reference manual but ended up reading it in-full, almost twice actually.I have formally studied philosophy and have been reading the various bits of it consistently for 15 years and especially this year past. What I like about this book in particular is how it chronologically builds from antiquity on and makes clear, as it goes how philosophical thinking built between scholars marking one paradigm shift to the next. I also appreciated the credit given to lesser known scholars who were responsible for many of the ideas we take for granted today.From a more personal perspective, I felt the philosophers of antiquity attempted to tackle far broader issues an... mored offered up more profound solutions than did their Renaissance and modernist counterparts. For example, if one explores the most recent theories emerging in theoretical physics it seems there are several correlations one can make between these findings and the overlying theories of Spinoza or Epicurus, conclusions they reached by reason alone.Out of all the scholarly summations presented, I found those that emerged in modern times least interesting and useful. Most of the modernist focus was on social deconstruction, discourse analysis and the post-modernist assumptions that go along with it. Part of my disinterest stems from having been academically and professionally trained to employ these types of methodologies and then subsequently learning more of the limitations that go with them and the associate impracticalities of them in the ‘real world’. The Philosophy Book is an easy-to-read enjoyable book with plenty of thoughts to consider. 4 out of 5 stars for DK Publishing and their numerous Contributors!
review 2: This book was fantastic. Covering different philosophical theories of many branches including ethical, metaphysical, political and religious. Starting off from the ancient world, 700BCE, and spanning over all of the most important and thought provoking philosophies up till the modern day. Each philosophical theory has been condensed into no more than two pages, yet contains a background on the philosopher, the age and the events that may have influenced that particular theory, the influence it caused, and examples in relating that theory real life. less
