review 1: Spring is Here is a great tale of friendship and the excitement of the beginning of spring. Friends Mole and Bear are hibernating for the winter and spring has begun. Mole wakes up and smells the fresh spring air. He gets dressed and goes outside careful not to wake Bear. He wants to make sure it is really spring. Once he is sure, he tries to wake Bear who is snoring away. He tries tapping on the window, knocking on the door, tickling his nose and playing his horn loud. None of these ideas worked so Mole decided to make Bear breakfast. This worked Bear smelled all the yummy food and woke right up. Then he looked at Mole who was fast asleep from all his hard work trying to wake Bear up. This is a great book for a read aloud, especially with all the use of onomatop... moreoeia throughout the story. You could read through and have the students help you read the sound words like knock, knock, knock and squish, squish, squish. The illustrations in this story use digitally manipulated pencil drawings with water based coloring. The drawings help show all the signs that spring is here. You could ask your students to help point some of these out like the patches of snow still left with flowers beginning to bloom next to them and softening mud that squishes under Moles feet. The cover spanning from front to back showing Mole blowing a horn in Bears sleeping face would be a great start to the story by asking students what they think the story is about, you could ask them if they know when bears do most of their sleeping. This would be a good book to use with K-1 grades with the use of a lesson on animal habitats or discovering the signs of spring.
review 2: Mole wakes up one morning and discovers that Spring has arrived. Mole decides that it is his job to wake up Bear. He taps on the window, he knocks on Bear's door and tickles his nose with a feather but Bear will not awaken. Hmm, what to do? Mole has an idea and decides to cook! Bear wakes up for a tray full of goodies but someone else is snoring now. Hillenbrand's beautifully illustrated tale of Spring will have great appeal to preschoolers. less
