review 1: The Science of Yoga is great book for anyone who wants to explore the history of yoga and the scientifically-backed benefits, while not wasting time on the useless stuff and being aware of what to flat out avoid.I've been doing yoga for over a decade now and this was a well written and thoroughly researched book that I wish I had when I first started - I highly recommend it for both beginners and the seasoned yogis. Unfortunately most won't like what it has to say. This is not a guide to yoga, or a "do this and not those things" so much as it gives a history of yoga - something few yogis actually know - along with a scientific review of some common claims made by the industry.Yoga is often touted as a magic bullet to rid yourself of that spare tire, attain perfect flexibili... morety, zen-like calmness, building strength and also being a good cardio workout. The truth is that, some of these are true, partially true or flat out false, for reasons you can read about in the book. However, there are a lot of actual, scientifically proven benefits to yoga. The industry would do a lot better if they would actually tout the stuff that is scientifically backed, and hurry up and drop all the unfounded claims and the woo. This is a very fair, well-researched book that highlights what yoga does well, while also shining a light on the claims made that are false. With the knowledge from this book in hand, anyone doing yoga can make their practice safer and a lot more useful.
review 2: An interesting book for anyone who loves yoga. Most of us think the asanas are thousands of years old - turns out that's not so, according to this book. The author goes in-depth on the history of yoga, and has a special interest in the amount of injuries that are apparently happening to yogis, especially women. As someone who probably injured myself doing yoga, I found his info very interesting. This book is fairly controversial, as not many in the worldwide yoga community want people to realize how easy it is to hurt themselves. less
