review 1: a lengthy and often painfully detailed account of the first few years of Barbra Streisand’s entrance into the world of entertainment. Captured from the countless biographies written about Barbra and thorough review of contracts and memorabilia, William Mann reconstructs her life, what drives her and her goals. In honesty, the book is overdetailled for the average reader’s taste, however the last 50 pages skims through her life from 1964 into the 70's, time when it would have been nice to have more intimate details.
review 2: I don't usually read star bios, but I'm fascinated with La Streisand. I must say this book confirmed my feelings - not about Streisand but about star bios. It's packed with pages that include "One of her good friends said...." or "In
... moreher penthouse apartment, Barbra must have been thinking...." No names, no confirmations, just a lot of celebrity trashing. I'm sure Streisand is complicated and difficult. I'm sure the loss of her father and the coldness of her mother contributed to that. After 500 plus pages, we don't learn much more. And since the author is so vague about his sources, it's hard to know the accuracy of what he did tell us, at least insofar as the stuff he revealed that isn't in the public record. less
