review 1: This book follows a boy in an African village that was hit by a drought and crops begin to suffer. There is little money so William Kamkwamba isn't allowed to go to school, but finds time to go to the library. He figures out a way to bring electricity to his village by building a windmill our of scraps. This is a great examples of engineering with little materials and helps students begin to understand how to be resourceful. Lexile Measure: 910LDRA: 60Guided Reading: W
review 2: I wish I had read this original story, the longer one, but the collage illustrations by Elizabeth Zunon add to the tale, too, of a starving boy in Malawi who used the resources available to change his world, now changing more than that! If you haven’t read about William Kamkwamba and
... morehis search for answers in a small library while his family and community starved for lack of water and failing crops, you should. It is a story of grit and determination to solve the problem, and with meager resources found in the trash heap, a windmill was made! Zunon’s collages are beautiful to see and the story is an inspiration to share. less
