review 1: Brilliantly written account of the amazing story of the expedition of Francisco de Orellana and his crew of conquistadores down the Amazon river in 1542. The Spaniards were the first Europeans to see the Amazon, had no idea where they were going to, how long it would take and ended up floating down the river for 8 months. One of William Ospina´s achievements is that the language he uses to describes these events feels both 21st and 16th century, both fresh and ancient. Looking forward to read the next book of this trilogy!
review 2: Pedro de Ursua is the main character of this fiction. Mr Ursua turns to be a conquistador from Spain who goes on a adventure-like trip on a quest for fame and fortune. The author does a good job at combining the events from the pa
... morest and putting them together with more up-to-date information from scholars and historian. This is not an easy task to accomplish given the important of the events that unfold in the plot. The novel has a narrative theme with a vast number of action pack scenes. Scenes that describe how the indians and the spaniards life together for so long without getting on each others nerves. The authors is very well informed about the treatment given to the spaniards by the indians and so does an excellent job at portraying it without missing the important factors and minor technicalities of the matter. The author also seems to involved himself in the narration of the plot, it is as if Mr Ospina wants to be there, along with Pedro Ursua, I personally don't know what this is called but I find it fascinating and very creative. It gave me a feeling of envy, because here I am outside reading along while Mr. Ospina is inside the story, living it, walking in it. A very deep form of expressing one's feeling. Telling a story about event that happen so long ago is not easy task but the author does a good job at it, it is this element and characteristic of the story that caught my attention the most and which I will start incorporating into my own style of writing. less
