review 1: This comic is disturbing. Very bad things happen to nearly every character, and most characters have unhappy endings. Yet, the writer's viewpoint is intriguing and clever; even more so because, for the most part, the story of Pinocchio is told almost exclusively in pictures, without words. It is beautifully drawn and illustrated too. The narrative threads all tie up in the end, and come together in the course of the story in unexpected ways.
review 2: This is an extremely violent and dark retelling of the Italian fable, featuring a naive superweapon Pinocchio created by enterprising arms dealer Gepetto. Jiminy Cricket is a struggling, alcoholic existentialist writer and the Seven Dwarves are sadistic rapists and kidnappers. The drawing is in the R. Crumb/Tony M
... moreillionaire style, but with a nice array of media beyond black ink, including some chalk and pastel drawings. less
