review 1: I picked up the audio recording of this book, more out of a sense of duty than any real desire. Since I write Christian fiction, I figured I had to read it to understand the market and why this became such a hit. I'd heard all the naysayers who were unhappy with the theology, having God take on the form of a tall black woman, etc. So I went in expecting to hear a liberal version of the Gospel. I'm happy to report that I heard nothing that contradicted what I've read in the bible. Some will say that the author suggests that no one goes to hell. God (or Papa) in the story never says that. He says he never condemns anyone to hell. And this follows the Gospel. God does not send sinners to hell. We choose whether or not to believe and enter into heaven. It's always our choice a... morefter what Christ did on the cross. Jesus is very prominent in the story, taking on His human, first century Jewish form. The Holy Spirit is represented by an Asian Woman. Again, it is made clear that these forms were chosen for the purpose of ministering to the protagonist. By the time I was finished with The Shack, I was both questioning my understanding of God's character and the Gospel, and found my faith strengthened, understanding that nothing I can do will make God love me any more or any less. I found myself in tears while driving to and and from work. This book represents the Godhead as best any human can understand it. I recommend this book to anyone. Period. Christian or not. It will change your life.
review 2: I received this book through the Goodreads Giveaways. This book compliments THE SHACK. I just finished a Bible Study on THE SHACK and this devotional book'arrival was the perfectly times. Each day is a quote from the book, followed by a short narrative to add to your reflection time. Although I find the companion a great way to re-visit the book and reflect, I do think if you did not read THE SHACK, the book would not be as valuable to you. less
