Toradora!
review 1: Ryuji is just a normal high schooler with a small problem: his eyes and aggressive outlook give him a tough reputation that he in no way deserves and a nickname that prevents him from making any real friends. Things are looking up for Ryuji this year, however, as he gets to be in the same class with his one and only friend Yusaku, and his secret crush Minori. That is, until he knocks into the Tiger Taiga, a feisty short girl who's not only badass, but has a few secrets of her own. Their encounter leads to a unique friendship in very hilarious and cute romantic comedy.Just for information purposes, the book I'm reviewing is the manga interpretation of the original light novels. I definitely plan to watch the anime at the very least, and am interested in reading the books.To... moreradora reminded me of a lot of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. An unlikely couple, a badass and witty heroine, just without all that supernatural stuff. And I have to admit, Toradora really does have a pretty simple plot, boy meets girl, friendship, hilarity, and we all know love will eventually follow. In spite of that, Toradora is an absolute pleasure to read. It's funny, it's cute, and it's 100% addicting. It reminded me of Ouran High School Host Club, in that they do have predictable plots, yet you don't care. Because it's not about the ending, it's about the journey, and the characters. It's the how that's important in this series. So far, Taiga is definitely my favorite character of them all. She's an easy grrl power heroine, and I love, simply love the way she pushes Ryuji around. I also enjoy the fact that she's so clumsy, and needs help from Ryuji quite a bit. I like the fact that she has weaknesses in spite of her strength. It helps balance her out. I like Ryuji as well. He's an easy likable hero, and he really does try to be a nice person. His mom is quite interesting as well, and provides some easy comic relief. So far, I don't really care about either Yusaku and Minori, but they're just background at this point anyway. Very odd background, especially that Minori. The art is a bit smudgy looking, and kind of bumbles all over the place. It gets better as you read, and I'm sure clarity will easily follow in the next few volumes. All in all, brilliant, hilarious and addictive. 4.5/5
review 2: Based on a series of light novels published in Japan. I love this series. It's cute and charming and the art and story are both very well done. The chapters seem a little short, so it makes for a fast read which for me is a little disappointing since I want to savor the story.Taiga is very adorable and the very definition of a Tsundere. However, she does mellow quite a bit (but never completely, you know) with the influence of Ryuuji. And yeah, I do think Taiga and Ryuuji make for an adorable couple... if if they don't quite see it yet. I have been watching the anime as well which explore the story further. I never read the light novels so I have no idea how the series itself ends. less
