review 1: I just could not get invested in the outcome of this novel, for some of the reasons other reviewers have shared, and because it seemed more and more predictable as I got through the first quarter of the book. Awkward phrasing combined with missed opportunities for effective editing, like the following, put the nail in the coffin - I returned the book to the library unfinished:"'Yia-yia. Are you lonely here?' The words spilled out of Daphne's mouth like the guts of a sacrificed lamb."-p. 101
review 2: Corporon is at her best in describing the Greek culture on the island - the food, close caring friendships, especially those extended to children. I found the romance too predictable and the heroic accounts of the people keeping Greek Jews safe (a major feature as
... more described in the reviews and a very heroic undertaking) given too little attention. Wish it had been expanded. She's a good writer and I look forward to more by her. less

Fairly predictable but nice enough. Greek food descriptions are fun
