review 1: My grandfather was a 2nd lieutenant in the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific during WWII under Chesty Puller and every now and then he would tell me about his experiences on the islands of Peleliu, Palau, Truk and others. It was not something he liked to talk about a lot, so reading this book helped complete a picture of what it was like for him and the thousands of Marines who experienced the war there. The first-hand stories were fascinating to read and the book followed an historical timeline, which helped the flow. I sometimes would have to go back recheck who was telling his story, as it would jump from one person's perspective to another. But all in all this book is an incredible piece of anecdotal history describing what these brave men experie... morenced.
review 2: Of course as an inactive Marine people might find my liking of this book only natural (and perhaps that is true). However as someone who likes to read first hand accounts of historical events this is a terrificbook to read. Here you get to read of the real experiences as recounted by some fifteen former Marines who took part many significant battles in the Pacific Theater.Hearing of the motivation of these mostly very young men (and boys) who passionately wanted to aid the United States in its efforts against the Japanese after Pearl Harbor and what they go throughin this effort is pretty much astounding. The Marine Corps takes great pride in over coming difficult situations. The men in this book talk about just how they went about doing that in spite of the over whelming horror of the battles and the natural elements that impacted their effectiveness (ie jungles, rain, mud, lack of food and sanitary conditions, etc.).As a kid growing up with relatives who, as navy personnel, took part in some of the battles I never heard a word of what it was like. Likewise having spent four years as a Marine pretty much none of the WWII Marines that I met did not talk about what they experienced. This book just reinforced the respect I felt for those who served at this time of crises in the United States not to mention the increase in pride that I feel for having been a member of the United States Marine Corps. less
