review 1: From the start of this book you are filled with so many different emotions, you don't know if you should be laughing or crying or doing both . The story really get you thinking about how much life has changed since the late 1800's, but are still the same in so many ways. Some men will always be the type to try and take what they want, while others are the kind hearted souls we all long for. Sometimes it's easy to try and do the right thing, but it ends up being the wrong thing.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, as long as I didn't think about it. I cannot enjoy a romance novel if the obstacle keeping the lovers apart doesn't work for me--in this one it doesn't work. Seriously, what actual human male lets such stupid stuff keep him from the woman he desire
... mores--only in silly romance novels written by women--male writers know better. Singing some Percy Sledge here "when a man loves a woman, can't keep his mind on nothin' else...etc.". Percy has it right, Adrianne has it wrong, or the human race would have ceased to exist long ago. Even though the author kept explaining the character's flawed reasoning, no matter how many times you repeat something that isn't working, it still doesn't work. The solution to the problems was too obvious. It is bad enough if everyone is ignoring the elephant in the living room, but in this case, it was two elephants in the living room. The character of Clara really started grating on my nerves--that was one totally selfish, manipulative little witch, and since when did four-year-olds go to the outhouse alone at night--hello, ever hear of chamber pots? The author has a pleasant writing style, develops interesting characters, and writes good dialogue and the book was a great pleasure to read as long as you didn't take time to note that the essence of the story is too weak to swallow and full of dumb stuff that makes no sense. But nevertheless, I really did enjoy this book. less
