review 1: Honest account of his closest relatives and of his relationship and judgements about them. At times it made me laugh out loud. I liked the way that Bennett reflected on what he was writing. Just when you think something like has he never heard of R D Laing, or was he not aware of the potential negative effects of ECT, he addresses the questions! While his father's values reminded me of my own father's values, his parents seem to me to be damaged in a peculiarly English way. I liked his aunties much more than he did!
review 2: While we're on the subject of books about aging... This is an excerpt from a longer memoir, focusing on the decline of Bennett's parents along with various aunts and uncles. Bennett is the ultimate dry, emotionally distant British narrator
... more, which means that the brutal facts of undignified age wind up speaking for themselves. I read this while I was between homes (en route from NY to Chicago)--which meant even more existential dread. Yay? less

Nice little memoir, tidy and meandering at the same time.
