review 1: This book was really cute even with the wars going on. I absolutely loved the writing style - I thought the author was really great at characterization and describing the various atmospheres and surroundings, even though I guess it would have helped if I was familiar with Paris - and I really liked the story about Léon and Louise and the people in their lives. I guess there was a little bit missing for it to become a 5* book for me - for one I would have liked to see Léon and Louise together more, but mostly I really enjoyed this book.
review 2: A charming tale of a young man stumbling upon love, evidently great love while pedalling through WWI France. Devoid of sentimental phrasing, the characters doodle along through life seeming astonished by their destini
... morees. This is an easy, fast read and while terribly entertaining the tone of voice is so glib and innocent that one wonders how lightly you should scratch the surface of the topics underlined in this story, the catacaclismic events of WWI, and WWII. I know people were told to buck up and carry on but, still! It makes me fear they've no depth of feeling, either Léon or Louise, leaving an impression of slightly robotic characters.Nevertheless, I enjoyed the humor and the simplicity. It's a new take on catastrophy. Leon and Louise blithely pedal around it, making do and taking no notice. The only person prone to drama in the entire story is Leon's wife: Yvonne, who consequently becomes fat. A hidden lesson? Don't sweat the big stuff either! Pedal! or risk obesity! Not Verlaine or Stendhal...this author is Swiss. less
