review 1: An unusual and amusing love story covering many decades and told with a light hand. The book was translated from German (the author is Swiss) and is about two people who meet in WW I in France, get separated for years after an explosion that leaves each thinking the other is dead, and reconnect intermittently without upsetting the marriage of the man (he has a wife as kooky as the two protagonists). Implausible but charming and a real window into the Nazi occupation of Paris in the second World War. The author is apparently well-known in Europe. I was very impressed with his writing style.
review 2: I rate this book a 3.4 on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being best. This is a good love story set amidst the turmoil of the second world war and the occupation of France
... more by the Nazi Germans. Some of the book’s strongest passages describe everyday life in Paris during the Vichy regime. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you met that long lost first love many years later, after you’d already formed a family, here is a possible scenario of how that might play out, albeit in France, where sexual mores may be a little different from what you are used to. less
