review 1: How cool a name is Fergal?!? I wish I had a friend called Fergal with a fro. We'd be unstoppable! Like Batman and Robin..................................Enough of that and back to business. For a black comedy/coming of age book it worked quite well considering that the whole basis of the plot was someones finger. A strange idea which if it doesn't put you off has to intrigue you which is really half of the battle towards liking this book. The coming of age aspect was cleverly twisted with the main genre of black comedy so that by the end of the book you realised just what the actual message was. This was without harping on about self-growth and the importance of family and friends when coping with any situation really. That happens more often in YA books than I'd like, I l... moreike a moral as much as the next person but there's often a vibe of "what a stupid teenager" that just makes me pissed off than like the book or receive the message. However saying that I really didn't get into the book. I didn't like Fergal or Charlotte therefore really didn't care when the inevitable happened so by the end I was completely indifferent to their fate which sounds harsh but surely this is the authors job to make me care for them? Their strange obsession with label-less tins in the bargain bucket was just that.......strange. Plus made no sense to me even when Shearer almost tried selling it as a hobby at the end! Tins are tins to me still I'm afraid. If you're a big fan of black comedy I'm sure you will love this book but for me, it just didn't work.
review 2: Canned by Alex Shearer its a mystery book. I have really enjoyed it. It's about a boy named Fergal Bamfield who as this passion on collecting cans. While collecting a few cans he wanted to open it but when he starts to find really disgusting things like a human finger. He wish he had a friend who collects cans so that he can share his experience but not many people have a passion on collecting cans. One day his dream came true. He met a girl with the passion so they became best friend but one day Fergal was lost. He was in a really big trouble. My favorite character is Charlotte (Fergal's friend) because I like the way she wanted to help Fergal when he was in big trouble. I would recommend this to anybody and everybody. less
