review 1: The novel opens with the line ‘Sebastian Lewis prayed his top hat wouldn’t be swept away’, and from that moment on, I felt very much like that top hat: swept away.Sebastian falls in love with an unlikely figure who threatens everything Sebastian has worked hard for. He must come to terms with who he is, in a society that is not understanding or forgiving of difference. There is intrigue, mystery, deception and a great deal of romance in this debut love story by Alexandra Ainsworth. It’s an impressive feat for a first-time writer, even more impressive that she pulls off the story with such aplomb.Ainsworth does for regency romance what E.L. James did for erotic romance. She brings something new and exciting that makes you want to read on and on, until it ends and yo... moreu feel hungry for more. The only shame is there is no follow-up, though I am assured it is in the works.Buy/rent/steal your copy now and rest assured that in five years when Alexandra Ainsworth’s name is on everyone’s lips you’ll be able to say ‘I bought a first edition of Ainsworth’s classic The Duke in Denial’. Don’t wait! Get swept away now!
review 2: Sounded promising, but I couldn't get past the first chapter. I read historical fiction because I like to see how people interacted in a different time and place, how they had all those social mores that they had to be following even when they were with close friends, not to mention how more convoluted and difficult courtship was when one couldn't even address one's fiancée by her first name...So it just miffs me that two gentlemen, who have just barely met on the street, decide to call each other by their first name and share their life stories. And then they blow off a social engagement to go get drinks and make eyes at each other. Everyone sounded too modern and I couldn't get into it at all. less
