review 1: This one is about Nick and Callie (and Mooch). Nick is harboring a whole lot of grief, guilt, and self-hatred. Callie sees the turmoil and haunted looks in Nick but does not know how to help him, if she even can. Mooch just wants everyone to be happy. Spence left everything to Callie, which makes some people really unhappy. Things go missing, Nick starts getting overly protective & calls Leif for reinforcements. A good book. Forgiveness and Understanding are key focal points here as well as a healthy dose of Patience (mostly on Callie's side). Nick is struggling and frustrated, but still endearing. Leif's persona is wonderful, he tries so darn hard to remain a happy, vibrant, charming guy when clearly he's frustrated and in pain from his injuries.Secondary characters (Brid... moreey, Gage, Syd, Clarence) are all enjoyable
review 2: I am totally in love with this author's Warriors of the Mist series so picked up this book although I knew it was a different read. I knew it had a dog in it and that it was about a returning soldier so that was enough to draw me in. I enjoyed the story of Nick coming home from Afghanistan to his fallen comrade, Spence's, home town and bringing the dog their company rescued with him. "Mooch" had returned the favor by alerting their company to danger and saving their lives. Because Nick was pretty sure he was going to stay in the Army and be deployed again, he was hoping that Spence's girl friend, Callie, would agree to adopt Mooch. The story was enjoyable to "live in" as it is a really lovely small American town with some interesting and good people in it. There is also an element of danger when someone breaks into the house next door to Callie who was left to her by Spence. And breaks in repeatedly. It's not a complicated story and somewhat predictable but I enjoyed the writing and the portrayal of Nick's battle with PTSD as I have learned a lot about it recently. I tagged it as not YA which is it not, but it definitely is not smutty or overly graphic - I like to make that clear when it is a non YA romance! It's a sweet story. That said, I sure need another Alexis Morgan book in the Warriors of the Mist series which is right up there in quality to my favorite fantasy series - the easily five star kind! less
